A CSX Transportation employee was seriously injured after a train accident at a Lake Township, Ohio railyard on April 1. The railroad worker was switching railcars on a track in CSX’s Stanley Yard when he was hit by a rolling railcar on the adjacent track. It is unclear at this time whether the worker was using remote-controls to operate the locomotive, or if the railcar was released by an operator using another remote-control device. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) statement, some switching at the yard is performed using remote-controlled locomotives.
NTSB spokesman Bridget Serchak stated it may take up to a year to complete the investigation; however, advisories could be issued sooner if urgent safety issues arise.
