Reservoir tanks manufactured by R&R Metal Fabricators and installed on nearly 6,000 General Electric locomotives manufactured between 1985 and 1995 were reported subject to rupture while in service. According to the Federal Railroad Administration, the rupture is a “rapid splitting and deformation of the reservoir tank along the longitudinal seam.” A rupture could result in serious injury or death to anyone nearby.
Inspection of the main reservoir tanks began in 2005 after four tanks ruptured while in service and GE reported the problem. The FRA issued a safety advisory in late December, 2007 expanding the program from inspection to replacement of all of the reservoir tanks by September 30, 2008. The program was expanded after GE reported that the inspections were “only partially effective in identifying the at-risk tanks.”
