Senator Charles Schumer of New York has called on the Federal Railroad Administration to a derailment that occurred Wednesday January 23 2008 in Canastota, as well as other train accidents that have happened over the last 18 months. Schumer described the derailment as “just the latest reminder that CSX’s persistently troubling safety record continues to threaten communities across Central New York. It’s time we got serious about demanding they step up investments in performance and safety.”
A recent FRA investigation found more than 3,500 safety defects on CSX’s rail system. CSX operations cover 23 states. Although CSX was fined $350,000 for the violations, Schumer called the amount “modest.”
