Two Railroad Employees Injured in Train Collision

January 21st, 2008 · No Comments

Two CSX Railroad employees were sent to the hospital with serious injuries after a train collision and derailment on January 5, 2008 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The train wreck occurred when a CSX train headed for the Avon rail yard hit 112 cars head-on after they were accidentally released.

The accident occurred behind the home of nearby resident Kay Schempp. “Within seconds you heard this huge explosion,” Schempp says. “I thought a plane had crashed.” Thirty-five train cars derailed in the Schempp backyard.

No residents were evacuated, although more than 3,500 gallons of diesel fuel and about 2,000 gallons of soybean oil leaked from railcars. CSX will be responsible for the cleanup.
