TRAIN CREW INJURED IN DERAILMENT

December 17th, 2007 · No Comments

At approximately 3:35a.m. on December 13, 2007, a Norfolk Southern coal train crashed into an intermodal train at a junction east of Abilene in Charlotte County, Virginia. Two locomotives pulling the coal train derailed in the accident and ended up on their sides. The train’s crew, the engineer and conductor, were injured in the crash. The engineer was treated and released and the conductor was taken to a hospital. Norfolk Southern Headquarters did not know which hospital the conductor was taken to for treatment.

At least four coal cars derailed and overturned in the accident resulting in significant damage to one of the cars. Each coal car carries approximately 100 tons of coal. Norfolk Southern does not know how much coal was dumped in the accident. In addition, approximately 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled from the derailed locomotives.

No one on the intermodal train was reported injured. Although seven flat cars on the intermodal train also were derailed in the collision, they were apparently empty. No reason for the accident was reported.
