A man was injured at the Port of Beaumont November 12, 2007 at approximately 8:00a.m. when a railroad track slid off of a forklift and landed on his right foot. The heel and soft tissue on the bottom of the employee’s foot was partially amputated, according to Beaumont Fire Department District Chief David Hooks. Although the injury was severe, Hooks reported that it was not life threatening.
According to employees that witnessed the accident, the injured man was standing near a forklift that was unloading railroad tracks when the tracks began to slide off of the lift. The employee tried to escape when the tracks began to fall, but slipped and a section of railroad track landed on his foot. He was taken to Christus-Saint Elizabeth for treatment.
Chris Fisher, Executive Director of the port, commented that “it’s a regrettable injury,” but added that work will continue at the port. Fisher said: “Injuries down here on the waterfront happen.”
